Proposed East Madison Historic District

Fresno, California


The East Madison Historic District was proposed as part of a Historic Resources Survey for the Ratkovich Plan area, prepared by John Edward Powell and Michael J. McGuire in 1994. The proposed district is a street district of Craftsman-era homes. Most of the district was developed between 1910-1912 by many different owners and builders, though some development occurred during the early 1920s. It is a solid example of a largely blue-collar neighborhood displaying exceptional integrity. Some recent infill has occurred without compromising the overall character of the street. Public treescaping along East Madison Avenue was a strong contributing factor in the identification of this district. Mature street tree specimens are noted along with selected replacement trees. This proposed forty-six-property district meets a 78 percent compliance ratio. Non-contributing properties are not listed here.
