Walking Tour: Civic Center, St. John's Cathedral & Warehouse Districts, Fresno, California

St. John's Cathedral

19. St. John's Cathedral (1902)

2814 Mariposa Street
Thomas Bermingham, Architect
Gothic Romanesque

Considered by some parishioners to be too far from town when it was first built, St. John's Cathedral soon became the heart of what was once a prime residential neighborhood. The oldest church building in Fresno, St. John's twin spires still form a part of the skyline of modern Fresno. The Cathedral continues to be the center of Catholic activity in the diocese.

The artwork behind the altar was done by Luigi Brusatori in 1915.
