34. Meux Home (1889)
1007 R Street Queen Anne
The Meux Home stands as a symbol of
Fresno's architectural tastes in its earliest days. This beautiful Victorian
was built by Dr. Thomas Richard Meux for his wife and three children in 1889.
The home was continuously occupied by members of the family for eighty-one
years, until it was bought by the City of Fresno in 1970 to be restored as the
city's United States Bicentennial Project.
The exterior walls feature three wood
surfaces typical of the time. Horizontal clapboard provides a feeling of
solidarity for both floors. The second floor is sheathed in scalloped shingles,
with a variegated pattern of shingles found under the steeply-pitched bagel
roof. Other examples of wood carving can be seen in fan designs at the top of
the pediment, the floral designs on the tower, and the detailed roof trim.
This home is in the National Register of
Historic Places, and a more detailed description is
available.
