Walking Tour: Wilson Avenue (Fresno, California)

Kump HomeErnest J. Kump Home (1936)

3887 North Wilson Avenue
Ernest J. Kump, Jr., Designer
International Ranch

This is a "woodsy” design predating Ernest Kump's later reputation in San Francisco as a modernist who favored wood detailing. It is very similar in appearance to designs by Frank Lloyd Wright, particularly his "Usonian" houses. This is an economically-built, honestly-detailed "natural" house.

The semi-circular fence is original, behind which is a reflecting pond. The front lattice fence is recent, but patterned after the original design of the rear fencing. Note also the then-advanced steel sash window units.

The house has been remodelled to the rear. Mrs. Kump recalled that they had to dynamite holes in which to plant trees. This was a common practice throughout Fig Garden because of the hardpan.

You may also wish to note the Wursteresque” 1970 Phillips residence across the street designed by Marin designer John Matthias–a fine late-era neighbor.
