Walking Tour: Wilson Avenue (Fresno, California)
Dr. Clarmont Doane Residence (1936)
4242 North Wilson Avenue
Charles Franklin, Architect
Ernest J. Kump and Alastair Simpson,
Designers International
This home was commissioned by Dr. and Mrs.
W. L. Adams as a wedding gift to their daughter upon her marriage to Dr.
Clarmont Doane, a prominent orthopedic surgeon. The house is a fraternal twin
to the Samuel Pudlin Residence at 2516 North Van Ness, near Fresno High School,
designed in 1935 by Ernest J. Kump. Jr. Both houses were influenced by advanced
housing designs promoted at the 1933 Chicago World's Fair.
The Doanes had several remodelling plans
prepared, including an expansion with a full second story and a scheme to make
the house look more traditional. Neither was carried out. Minor additions were
undertaken, including a family room to the rear and an extended garage at the
front (contemporary cars are longer than 1936 models).
Note the cantilevered eave extending from
the studio bedroom, adding a very dramatic '30s modernist touch.
