Hays HomeH.P. #310
Senator Ray W. & Marie Hays Home (1937)

1616 S. Minnewawa Avenue (view map)
Eclectic Ranch with Craftsman, Colonial Revival, and Tudor influences
attributed to Charles Butner, architect

This suburban ranch home, which draws from a diversity of architectural traditions, was originally built for California State Senator Ray Hays (1889-1973) and his wife Marie. Hays practiced law in San Franciso and Fresno before enlisting in the Army in 1916. He was a member of the California State Senate from 1930 to 1942. Family tradition suggests that Hays may have worked with architect Charles Butner to design the home, but this has not been proven.
